Your Freedom Number: Why Retirement Is 25× Spending, Not an Age
By Elvin Stevens, Founder · July 19, 2026 · 2 min read
Ask when you can retire and most people name an age. But 65 isn't a financial fact — it's a historical artifact. The real answer is a number: roughly 25 times what you spend in a year.
Where 25× comes from
The figure is the inverse of the 4% rule, drawn from the Trinity Study's analysis of historical markets: a diversified portfolio supporting a 4% first-year withdrawal (adjusted for inflation thereafter) has survived essentially every 30-year retirement in modern history. Four percent, flipped over, is 25×.
Spend $50,000 a year? Your freedom number is $1.25 million. Spend $40,000? One million. Notice what that means: **cutting spending shrinks the target while raising savings — it's the only lever that pulls twice.**
The gap is smaller than the number
$1.25 million sounds impossible the way all compound-interest endpoints sound impossible. But the monthly contribution that reaches it is surprisingly ordinary with enough runway: at 7%, roughly $860 a month for 30 years does it — and far less if you're starting with existing savings. The same target starting 10 years later costs more than double per month. Time, not income, is the dominant variable.
An age tells you when someone else lets you stop. A number tells you when the math does. Only one of those is in your control.
Find your two numbers
You need exactly two: your freedom number (25× your real annual spending — most people have never calculated their real annual spending, which is its own revelation) and your gap (what your current savings-plus-contributions actually produce by your target date).
The calculator below computes both, plus the monthly contribution that closes the gap. Fair warning: the verdict is honest. If it says "not yet," the same tool shows precisely what "yet" costs per month. The full roadmap — milestones, the 30-day reset, and your lifetime plan — is Module 10 of the Wealth System, the capstone the other nine build toward.
