The real person behind the Bear

Hello, all my fellow bankrollers — I'm Elvin Stevens and I'm the Bear. Snape is my best buddy so I figured I'd create a quick video with him and my Bear character. We love our time hiking, spending time in the woods and just being together. I feel it is important to share the back story of of this wealth system that allows myself an so many others to enjoy the work life balance we all need and deserve.

For nearly two decades I've made my living as a software engineer — building systems that have to work every single time, for people who never see what's under the hood. But my real education started earlier, and it didn't come from a textbook. It came from watching the financial system chew people up, and deciding to learn exactly how the machine works.

The crash that changed everything

My money journey started more than 25 years ago, the way it starts for most people: earning, spending, and quietly wondering why the math never seemed to work in my favor. I wanted real answers, so in 2005 I went to university to study finance. I was going to learn the system from the inside.

Then 2008 happened.

I sat in finance classrooms while the global financial system — the one my textbooks described as rational and self-correcting — came apart in real time. Banks that were "too big to fail" failed. Families who did everything right lost homes, jobs, and decades of savings. And the people who wrote the rules? They got bailed out.

That semester taught me more than any course ever did. Two lessons, specifically. First: the system is not designed for you — it profits from confusion, and it is patient. Second: the people who came through 2008 intact weren't the ones with the best predictions. They were the ones with the best *systems* — automated savings, manageable debt, diversified assets, and a plan that didn't depend on the market's mood.

So I made a decision that shaped everything after: I switched from finance to computer science. If systems were what protected people, I wanted to spend my life learning to build them.

Two decades of building systems

I started my software engineering career in late 2009 — into the teeth of the worst job market in a generation — and I've been building ever since. Engineering rewires how you see everything. You stop believing in willpower and start believing in design. You learn that anything that depends on humans remembering to do the right thing every day will eventually fail, and anything automated, tested, and simple will quietly keep working for years.

Somewhere along the way I realized I'd been applying engineering to my own money the whole time. Budgets that run themselves. Savings that move before I can spend them. Debt attacked in mathematically optimal order. Investments on autopilot, ignoring the news. None of it glamorous — all of it working, year after compounding year.

That's when it clicked: personal finance isn't a knowledge problem. The math is genuinely simple — sixth-grade arithmetic, almost everywhere. It's a *systems* problem. And systems are exactly what nobody teaches.

Why the Bear exists

I always wanted to give back with what I've learned — not as another guru selling stock tips, but as an engineer handing you the blueprints. So I built the Bear Bankroll Wealth System: every principle that carried me from a confused finance student watching the world burn in 2008 to financial confidence, written down step by step, with the worksheets doing the math alongside you.

And yes — the teacher is a bear in a nice suit. That's deliberate. Money education fails when it's intimidating or dull, and the Bear is neither. A real person, with a real name, who has spent 17 years shipping software and far longer studying what money actually does.
