Your Lifetime Interest Bill: The Number Banks Never Mail You
By Elvin Stevens, Founder · July 19, 2026 · Updated July 21, 2026 · 2 min read
Your bank sends you a statement every month. It shows your payment, your balance, your due date — everything except the number that would actually change your behavior: the total interest you'll pay across every debt you carry, from today until the last payoff.
There's a reason nobody mails you that number. It's the product.
Why the total stays hidden
Monthly payments are designed to be individually painless. $1,770 for the mortgage, $480 for the car, $150 for the card — each one fits, more or less, and each arrives separately. Sum the *interest* across all of them to final payoff, and a typical household discovers a lifetime bill well into six figures. A $280,000 mortgage at 6.5% alone contributes over $357,000 of interest across 30 years — more than the house.
Spread across decades and split across statements, the number is invisible. Put it all in one place, though, and it'll light a fire under you.
Every dollar of your lifetime interest bill is optional. Not always *easily* optional — but negotiable in a way almost no other six-figure expense in your life will ever be.
The three levers
- **Rates:** refinancing high-rate debt is the only place in finance where a phone call can be worth thousands. The 24% card balance moved to a lower-rate instrument, the mortgage refinanced when rates dip — each directly deletes a slice of the bill.
- **Order:** paying debts by highest-APR-first (avalanche) minimizes the total, mathematically.
- **Time:** extra principal payments attack the bill's biggest multiplier. Early extras punch far above their weight, because early balances are where the decades of interest live.
Assemble your number
It takes two minutes: every debt's balance, rate, and payment into the calculator below. Fair warning — the total stings. It's supposed to. Module 3 of the Wealth System calls this the wake-up-call exercise, and it's the moment the entire debt-demolition plan starts making visceral sense. The bill is optional. Start canceling it.
