How this is calculated
Real hourly wage = (weekly pay − weekly work expenses) ÷ (official hours + commute hours + unpaid extra hours). Work expenses include commuting costs, parking, work clothes, bought lunches — money the job consumes to exist.
The 'life-minutes' price converts any purchase: cost ÷ real hourly wage × 60. It's the most honest price tag there is, because you pay for everything with hours of your finite life.
This idea — trading life energy for money — comes from the classic 'Your Money or Your Life' framework, and it quietly powers better decisions everywhere: jobs, commutes, purchases, and side hustles all become comparable in one currency: your hours.

Should I use pre-tax or after-tax salary?
Pre-tax keeps it comparable across jobs (tax situations vary); after-tax is more brutal and more honest for purchase decisions. Either way, apply it consistently — the insight survives both.
How does this change job comparisons?
A $70k job with a 90-minute commute can pay meaningfully less per life-hour than a $62k job ten minutes away. Salary negotiations, remote-work value, and relocation math all get clearer priced per real hour.
