The hours that don't appear on the timesheet

The job doesn't start when you badge in. It starts with the commute, includes the getting-ready, extends through lunch you didn't really take, and follows you home in evening emails. Add five hours of commuting and a few unpaid extras and a "40-hour" job routinely consumes 48–50 hours of life per week.

Then come the expenses the job requires: gas or transit, parking, work clothes, bought lunches, sometimes childcare hours that exist only because the job does. That money never felt like a pay cut — but it is one.

The recalculation

Real hourly wage = (weekly pay − weekly work costs) ÷ total weekly hours the job consumes. Run it and a $31/hour salary quietly becomes $22. A "big raise" at a company an hour's drive away becomes a pay cut. This one number reprices your entire working life.
